New Zealand and Australia

Both New Zealand and Australia are vast and incredibly diverse countries, offering a wide range of experiences from stunning natural landscapes to vibrant city life. Here is a curated list of some of the best places to visit in each country, highlighting what makes them unique.

New Zealand

New Zealand's two main islands, the North and the South, offer distinct but equally breathtaking experiences.

Australia

Australia is a massive country with a wide array of climates and landscapes, from tropical rainforests to arid deserts and stunning coastlines.

Queenstown on the South Island of New Zealand

New Zealand

South Island

  • Queenstown: Known as the "adventure capital" of New Zealand, Queenstown is a hub for outdoor activities. You can go bungee jumping, jet boating, or skydiving. It's also a great base for exploring the surrounding dramatic scenery, including the historic town of Arrowtown, the picturesque village of Glenorchy, and the Gibbston Valley wine region.
  • Milford Sound: Often called the "Eighth Wonder of the World," this stunning fiord in Fiordland National Park is a must-see. Towering peaks, sheer cliffs, and waterfalls cascade into the glassy waters. A boat cruise is the most popular way to experience it, and you can even opt for an overnight stay to enjoy the absolute silence after the day-trippers have left.
  • Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park: Home to New Zealand's tallest mountain, Mount Cook, this national park is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. The park is surrounded by beautiful alpine lakes, glaciers, and offers a variety of hiking trails, including the trek to the Mueller Hut.
  • Abel Tasman National Park: Located at the northern tip of the South Island, this coastal paradise is famous for its crystal-clear bays, golden-sand beaches, and native bush. You can explore it by hiking the Abel Tasman Coast Track, kayaking, or taking a water taxi.
  • The Catlins: For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, head to the Catlins in the deep south. This wild and remote area is known for its rugged coastline, numerous waterfalls, and abundant wildlife, including penguins and sea lions.
  • Lake Tekapo: This lake is renowned for its vibrant turquoise color and its location within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, one of the darkest places in the world. It's an ideal spot for stargazing and offers spectacular night sky views.

North Island

  • Hobbiton: A must for any Lord of the Rings fan, this film set is the picturesque village of The Shire. Located in the Waikato region, a visit here offers a magical experience walking through the hobbit holes and enjoying the lush countryside.
  • Rotorua: Known for its geothermal activity and rich Māori culture. Here you can see bubbling mud pools, erupting geysers, and natural hot springs. You can also experience a traditional Māori cultural performance and feast.
  • Tongariro Alpine Crossing: A challenging but rewarding one-day hike, this trek is considered one of New Zealand's most famous. It takes you through a unique volcanic landscape with panoramic views of active volcanic areas and vibrant crater lakes.
  • Coromandel Peninsula: Famous for its misty forests and pristine beaches. A highlight is Hot Water Beach, where at low tide, you can dig your own hot pool in the sand.
